AUGUST Classroom Application: Review definition. Discuss how responsibility was recently demonstrated by classmates. Read books that are good examples of responsibility (ie: Harry in Trouble, Yossi Abolafia; The Terrible Wave, Dahlstedt; Awful Thursday, Lillian Hoban) Write or review class rules and discuss each student’s responsibility to abide by these rules. Discuss how students can assume responsibility for their school items such as home work, lunch cards, coats, books, bags, etc…. Discuss taking responsibility for yourself by knowing your name, address, phone number, birth date and knowing what to do in case of an emergency. Workplace Application: Place "Community of Character" posters in employee break rooms, near time clocks, HR department and other employee gathering areas or customer areas. Emphasize character trait of the month by placing definitions on payroll checks, hold contests within your place of employment to encourage the trait of the month, discuss the program and/or trait at your staff meetings. Lead by example. Set clear expectations for your employees and hold them accountable for their actions. Use your head; think before you act; imagine the consequences. Be reliable and dependable; when you agree to do something, do it. Take care of your own business. Don’t make others do what you are supposed to do. Take responsibility for your actions; don’t make excuses or blame others. Home Application Use the calendar provided for discussion with your family: Talk about each family member’s responsibilities; make a chore chart As a parent, know where your children are, what they are doing and with whom. Learn to say "no" and mean it. Define reasonable limits and enforce them appropriately.
