FEBRUARY

Honesty:  Fairness and truthfulness in word and action.  

Classroom Application:

* Review Definition.
* Discuss how honesty was recently demonstrated by classmates or family.
* Have students make a list of ways they can demonstrate honesty.
* Discuss recent situations in which it was a challenge to be honest.
* Tell a short story about how one "lie" can lead to another.
* Discuss the consequences of "small" lies.
* Make a list of "types" of academic dishonesty (ie: cheating on tests, changing a grade, plagiarism, forging a signature).
* Read books that are good examples of being honest (ie: The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Aesop, Pinocchio, Carlo Collodi, A Big Fat Enormous Lie, Marjorie Weinman).

Workplace Application:

* Place "Community of Character" posters in employee break rooms, near time clocks, HR department and other employee gathering areas or customer areas.
* Emphasize character trait of the month by placing definitions on payroll checks, hold contests within your place of employment to encourage the trait of the month, discuss the program and/or trait at your staff meetings.
* Talk to employees/coworkers about how important honesty is and the consequences of dishonesty in the workplace.
* Lead by example and show your honesty and integrity.
* Remind your employees of all the forms of dishonesty: lying (calling in when not really sick), cheating (not clocking in correctly, taking long lunches), misleading others, misrepresentation, doing personal business on company time, stealing (office supplies).

Home Application

* Discuss honesty with your family. Use the calendar provided for discussion ideas and talk to your kids about what it means to be honest.
* Demonstrate that you value honesty and reward honest efforts with school work even if it doesn't produce "A" work.
* Lead by example.
* Consider hypothetical choices: What would you do if…? Help your child make good, honest decisions.
* Select an article from a newspaper or magazine and analyze it for honesty.
