Respect:  Treat others as you want to be.  

Classroom Application:
* Review definition.
* Discuss how respect was recently demonstrated by classmates.
* Read books that are good examples of respect (ie: Leroy and the Old Man, William Butterworth; Ruby the Copy Cat, Rathman; I'm Glad I'm Me, Stone)
* Discuss the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance and how this demonstrates respect for our county.
* Remind your students to always use "please" and "thank you".
* Talk about different kinds of respect: respect for other people, the environment, self-respect, to others property, elderly people, the community, police officers, etc…

Workplace Application:

* Place "Community of Character" posters in employee break rooms, near time clocks, HR department and other employee gathering areas or customer areas.
* Emphasize character trait of the month by placing definitions on payroll checks, hold contests within your place of employment to encourage the trait of the month, discuss the program and/or trait at your staff meetings.
* Lead by example.
* Discuss "respectful" rules of the workplace. Talk about how positive and negative words that you hear every day show respect or disrespect to others.
* Respect differences: don't tell or laugh at jokes that stereotype or put people down, make a special effort to expand your circle of friends to include those who are different or ignored.
* Urge employees to recycle/reuse to respect the environment.

Home Application

* Use the calendar provided for discussion with your family:
* Talk about how good manners - courtesy, politeness, kindness - demonstrate respect.
* Teach your children to respect people who are different than them. Read books and watch movies about other cultures, talk about different backgrounds, talk about the ways people are different and the ways they are the same,
* Help your child become sensitive to his/her own behavior or language that may be of a disrespectful nature.
