Generosity:  Selfless sharing of one's time, talent & resources.  

Classroom Application:

* Review definition.
* Discuss how generosity was recently demonstrated by classmates.
* Read books that are good examples of being generous (ie: Bailey's Birthday, Marsh Media; The Golden Goose, Linda M. Jennings; The Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein)
* Have the students write an essay about what it would be like if there was no generosity in the community. What would it be like if everyone were selfish?

Workplace Application:

* Place "Community of Character" posters in employee break rooms, near time clocks, HR department and other employee gathering areas or customer areas.
* Emphasize character trait of the month by placing definitions on payroll checks, hold contests within your place of employment to encourage the trait of the month, discuss the program and/or trait at your staff meetings or add articles to company newsletters.
* Lead by example.
* Share a smile, lend a hand, be supportive, be generous with praise, patience and kind words towards your co-workers.


Home Application

* Use the calendar provided for discussion with your family.
* Talk with your child about what it means to be a generous person and why it's important. Talk about what it would be like in the world if people didn't help each other.
* Point out to your child when he/she is generous. Be a good role model and help them to have a mental picture of good behavior.
* Watch television together and point out examples in the news of people who give money, time and/or effort to improve the lives of others.
* Help your child make a list of ways to show generosity without spending money.
* Consider purchasing, or renting from the library, the book 10-Minute Life Lessons for Kids: 52 Fun and Simple Games and Activities to Teach Your Child Trust, Honesty, Love and Other Important Values, by Jamie C. Miller
