Courage:  Doing the right thing at any cost.  

Classroom Application:

* Review definition.
* Discuss how courage was recently demonstrated by classmates.
* Write an essay about a historical event in which courage played a major role.
* Read books that are good examples of courage (ie: The Emperor's New Clothes, Hans Christian Andersen; The Little Engine That Could, Watty Piper; Sarah, Plain and Tall, Patricia MacLachlan; The Story of Harriet Tubman)
* Discuss what it takes to stand up to peer pressure. Discuss the kinds of peer pressure that exists at school and what makes it difficult to resist these pressures.
* Identify acts of courage by people in the news or by people in your community.

Workplace Application:

* Place "Community of Character" posters in employee break rooms, near time clocks, HR department and other employee gathering areas or customer areas.
* Emphasize character trait of the month by placing definitions on payroll checks, hold contests within your place of employment to encourage the trait of the month, discuss the program and/or trait at your staff meetings.
* Lead by example.
* Print out quotations and other inspiring writings about courage and post them around the workplace.
* Emphasize the following behavioral definitions of what courage means: Stand up for what is right, even if you stand alone. Don't avoid trying something for fear of making a mistake or failing. Don't be afraid to express yourself just because some people might disapprove.

Home Application

* Use the calendar provided and the following questions for discussion with your family:
*Have you ever gone along with the crowd even though you knew it was wrong?
*What ways have you demonstrated courage in your life?
*What are you afraid of?
* Help your kids write a letter to someone whose courage has impressed them.
