Why do we use Police Dogs at the Peru Police Department?
The answer is easy, officer safety and community safety. We capitalize on the abilities the dog has to make our job safer and to apprehend suspects that would normally get away without them.
To give you an idea about their abilities:
Smell- This is their primary sense and is much better than ours. Estimates are from a thousand times better and millions of times better.
Sight- Dogs see much better at night than we do and have a greater ability to pick up movement. Their color vision is limited.
Speed- Obviously dogs can run faster than us--a working 70 lb. German Shepard can run approximately 30 mph.
Agility- Dogs can jump very high and get into places that we cannot safely enter.
