Board of Works

 

Every city must have a Board of Works.  The Board of Works consists of the Mayor and two members appointed by the Mayor.  The Clerk-Treasurer is the clerk of the board.  The board's authority includes control of streets, sanitation and  transportation.  Their function also includes control of law enforcement and fire safety, although the Mayor appoints the Police Chief, Fire Chief and City Engineer to handle day-to-day responsibilities for their respective departments. Our current Board of Works consists of:

REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND

SAFETY OF THE CITY OF PERU, INDIANA May 1, 2008

The Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of Peru, Indiana met in regular session at 9:00 am May 1, 2008 with the following members present: Mayor James Walker, Board Member Thomas McKaig, City Attorney Bruce Embrey, City Clerk-Treasurer Jackie Gray and Deputy Clerk Dea Masters. Others present was Fire Chief Wayne Mannies, Chief of Police Bill Raber, department heads and other interested parties. ******************************************************************

Motion was made by Bruce Embrey, seconded by Tom McKaig to suspend the rules and dispense with the reading and correcting of Journal of minutes of regular meeting on April 15, 2008

OLD BUSINESS:

Police Chief Bill Raber asked if anyone representing the Heritage Day event was here to discuss request, Mayor Secretary Lori Holderman stated that she contacted Rob Spahr and asked if he could be here for this meeting and he stated that he has resigned.

Dear Gentlemen:

The Cole Porter Car and Bike Show is Sunday June 15, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We are requesting that Fifth Street be closed from Broadway to Wabash, Court Street to Main Street, and Broadway from Main to Sixth, if needed, beginning at 8:0 a.m.

NEW BUSINESS: Garage Demo request:

Alex Bondar owner of a garage located at 65 East Main Street, request alley to be closed May 5-9, 2008 so that he can place a dumpster there during the demolition of the garage. Walker asked that Mr. Bondar contact his neighbors as a matter of courtesy to inform them of the closing of the alley.

Bruce Embrey made a motion to approve request from May 5th to May 9th after trash pick-up, seconded by Tom McKaig.

NEW BUSINESS: Tyra Walker with Edward D. Jones:

Mrs. Walker gave a presentation on retirement plans and investments for the City employees and ask if she could be a vendor for the City employees. Due to Mrs. Walker being the Mayor’s wife, Bruce Embrey stated that he will approach the State Ethics Council to get their advise on whether or not it would be ethical for Mrs. Walker to be the representative for the City.

Tom McKaig stated that the City needs to have a policy in place in regards to the vendors that the city has in regards to insurance and investment companies. He and Bruce will look into this matter.

Mayor Walker stated that Park Board President Mark Hall addressed with him the issue of the Miller Pool pump that has gone bad and the cost to replace it is $6,000.00. The City doesn’t have the funds. Bruce will check with the YMCA to see if they raised the funds to cover the cost.

City Zoning Administrator Bill Gornto stated that he has had complaints from the owners of the house between Pizza King and Swifty. When customers line up at Swifty’s they block the property owners driveway. He is requesting permission to have the City Traffic Department place a sign at the end of the drive way that states "DO NOT BLOCK DRIVE.

With nothing further to come before this meeting Bruce Embrey made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Tom McKaig.
