September Trait: Perseverance: working hard and not giving up Classroom Application:
Ø Review definition.Ø Discuss how perseverance was recently demonstrated by classmates.Ø Read books that are good examples of perseverance (ie: Little Engine that Could, Watty Piper; The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, Dr. Seuss; The Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein; I Can’t Said the Ant, Polly Cameron; Fables, Arnold Lobel)Ø Discuss the problems that students face, such as procrastination and cutting classes, and how they must persevere to reach their goals.Ø Invite someone from the community in to discuss their diligence in pursuing their goals, obstacles he/she had to overcome and factors that led to his/her success.
Workplace Application:
Ø Place “Community of Character” posters in employee break rooms, near time clocks, HR department and other employee gathering areas or customer areas.Ø Emphasize character trait of the month by placing definitions on payroll checks, hold contests within your place of employment to encourage the trait of the month, discuss the program and/or trait at your staff meetings.Ø Lead by example.Ø Discuss long-term goals within your place of employment and your plan for achieving success.Ø Write out your 5-year and 10-year plan for your life and do the best you can to stay focused.

Ø Use the calendar provided for discussion with your family:Ø Help children break down large tasks into small steps that they can manage successfully to teach them diligence.Ø Lead by example and show them how determination and hard work in pursing a goal pay off.Ø Encourage them to stick with a commitment to a sports team, music lessons, etc…Ø Read with them from The Book of Virtues by William J. Bennett
